Start with the tank

A betta is often sold as a simple fish, but long-term care is much easier in a real aquarium. A 5 gallon tank or larger gives the water more stability and gives the fish room to swim, rest, and explore.

Keep water stable

The most important care habit is protecting water quality. Use a conditioner for tap water, test for ammonia and nitrite, and avoid large swings in temperature or pH.

Feed small portions

Feed a quality betta pellet as the staple diet and use frozen or freeze-dried treats sparingly. A betta stomach is small, so extra food quickly becomes a water quality problem.

Watch behavior

A healthy betta is alert, responsive, and able to swim normally. Resting is normal, but clamped fins, gasping, loss of appetite, or sudden hiding should prompt a water check.
